Reclining Chairs: Measure With the Footrest Open

Sep 25, 2026

The chair looks right in the plan. It sits near the wall, the walkway stays open, and then on the first evening it reclines — and the footrest arrives exactly where you wanted to walk. Nothing about the closed chair warned you.

Any reclining seat holds two footprints: the one you measured while it is closed, and the longer one that appears when you lean back. The second decides whether the piece actually works in the room.

The reassuring part is that the useful numbers exist. Some chairs below state their recline travel outright, and one removes the wall question altogether. Sort them by the decisions that genuinely separate them — where the footrest lives, what powers it, how the cover is made, and how high the seat sits — and the leather becomes a preference rather than a gamble.

The Gap Behind the Chair Is a Real Number

Reclining seating needs clearance behind it so the mechanism can travel without striking a wall or whatever sits beside it. That instinct is right, and it stays useless until it becomes a figure. The Wyndham Recliner - Dark Walnut - Brown supplies one: 19 inches from the wall to recline, with a full recline length of 70 inches. Its closed footprint is compact for a leather recliner, 32.75 inches wide and 29.5 inches deep, which is exactly why the two measurements have to be read together. The shallow chair and the long chair are the same chair.

The Leone Recliner answers the forward question instead, with a fully reclined depth of 62 inches against a closed footprint 27 inches wide and 37 inches deep. It is built on a solid oak frame with cane inlay, and its back cushion lifts out and reverses. In a room where the chair gets moved aside for guests or for vacuuming, that combination matters more than the fabric code.

Then there is the approach that deletes the wall problem altogether. The Fauna Power Recliner Accent Chair - Antigo Natural is described as a zero-clearance design that can be placed up against a wall, with hidden-button power recline, an adjustable headrest and a 9-foot-5 power cord, and its trade is written into the dimensions. At 45.5 inches wide and 45.25 inches deep, it is the broadest and deepest closed chair in this group. Zero clearance frees the wall. It does not free the floor.

Where the Footrest Lives

The difference that changes how a chair lives in a room is whether the footrest is built in. The Admiral R Chair With Footstool keeps it separate: the chair swivels a full 360 degrees on a laminated, stained beechwood base, and the ottoman can be pulled aside, used as a spare seat, or left where it is. It is listed in two sizes — 30.7 inches wide and 32.2 inches deep in the small, 33 inches wide and 34 inches deep in the large — with an adjustable head pillow, a manual release headrest angle and three leather colorways. A chair that never appears to unfold is worth the extra floor space in a room that has to work for conversation as well as television.

A built-in footrest buys that floor space back. The Magnus Recliner with Battery is described with dual motors and independent control of the footrest and the back, on a swivel base, with a moveable head pillow and a manual release headrest angle — the seat moves under power, the head support under your hands. It comes in Shadow Grey or Cigar leather, each in two sizes, and the name identifies a battery version, which is worth noticing if the only outlet sits across the room.

Two chairs put the mechanism on show rather than hiding it. The Elixir Power Recliner with Power Headrest stands in a dark gunmetal metal frame with a channeled back, 28.5 inches wide with a 24-inch seat, and is listed in Blue or Brown. Its power recline, power headrest and USB port are the same set the Henley Power Recliner with Power Headrest carries, but the chairs are not interchangeable: the Henley is a broad wingback with flared roll arms, contrasting welt and dark espresso wood legs.

Manual, Power, and What Each Control Buys You

Choosing between manual and power is really choosing who operates the chair and how. A manual push-back recline has no cord and no hand control; the chair moves when you do. The Baylen Tufted Back Swivel Recliner works this way, in a 28.5-inch-wide frame that both swivels and reclines, with a 21-inch seat, 20 inches deep, at an 18.5-inch seat height.

Power adds a button, and a power headrest adds a second one. That second control is the one people underestimate, because it changes the angle of support at the neck without asking you to rearrange a cushion. The Henley and the Elixir both list power recline, a power headrest and a USB port. The Admiral R solves the same problem by hand, with an adjustable head pillow and an adjustable headrest angle, while the Magnus splits the difference: motors for the back and footrest, a hand-adjusted head pillow.

Fabric, Leather, and the Order You Are Willing to Wait For

Upholstery is where a chair's character finally lands, and it is also where delivery timelines split. The Baylen Tufted Back Swivel Recliner is custom made to order in hundreds of fabric options — 8.0 yards of 54-inch plain fabric if you send your own — with production around four to eight weeks and a sale that is final once production starts. That is the honest cost of getting exactly the cover you want, and it is a different kind of decision from picking a chair that ships as it is shown.

Stocked covers make their own claims. The Leone is upholstered in LiveSmart Gellar-Linen fabric, which the maker describes as high performance and designed to resist stains and wear. The Fauna's Antigo Natural cover is listed as 53 percent polyester, 30 percent acrylic and 17 percent flax/linen over a eucalyptus plywood frame.

Leather does not behave as one material across these chairs. The Henley's leather is described as top grain with a wax-and-oil aniline finish, smooth-grained and mid-high sheen, while the Elixir's is a semi-aniline top grain. The Hope Recliner - Palermo Nude takes the leather route in a smaller frame: 27.5 inches wide and 36 inches deep, listed at 57.32 pounds, with a channel-tufted back and whitewashed ash framing. That weight makes it the lightest chair here, and it is among the narrowest — the leather option when the constraint is lifting and moving the chair rather than the floor space it stands on.

The Seat Height Nobody Measures

Seat height decides more about daily comfort than the cover does, and it is the number buyers skip. Across these chairs it runs from 17.7 inches on the Admiral R to 22.5 inches on the Henley — nearly five inches, which is the distance between a low, enveloping seat and a high one.

Seat depth divides them just as sharply. The Henley's seat is 21.25 inches deep and 21.5 wide. The Elixir's is 20 inches deep and 24 inches wide, a broader, flatter platform. The Baylen sits at 18.5 inches high with a 20-inch-deep, 21-inch-wide seat, and the Leone pairs a 21-inch seat height with 19 inches of depth. On the Admiral R, depth changes with the size you choose: 19.3 inches in the small, 20.1 in the large, at the same 17.7-inch seat height.

Before you buy, measure the chair you already sit in most — seat height, depth and width — and treat those three numbers as the specification. Everything else here is a preference you can live with or change. Those three you cannot.

Two Footprints, One Decision

If the wall behind the chair has to stay clear, start with the zero-clearance Fauna and accept 45.5 inches of width for it. If you have about 19 inches to give and want the fullest set of figures, the Wyndham is the chair you can tape out on the floor: a 29.5-inch closed depth and a 70-inch open length.

If floor space is genuinely tight, the Leone and the Hope stay near 27 to 28 inches wide, and the Leone states its 62-inch fully reclined depth outright. If the footrest should be able to disappear, the Admiral R's separate ottoman and 360-degree swivel do that. If the chair has to match a sofa's fabric, the Baylen's custom program will get there in four to eight weeks.

And if two people of different heights will use the chair, let seat height break the tie. The Henley's 22.5-inch seat is the highest in this group, the Leone's 21 and the Elixir's 20.25 sit in the middle, and the Baylen's 18.5 and the Admiral R's 17.7 ask you to settle deeper. Measure the room in both directions, then choose the seat you will actually climb out of.
