End Tables: Match the Height to Your Sofa or Chair Arm

Oct 5, 2026

The lamp has been sitting on the floor since the sofa arrived. It is not a style problem. An end table fails in one of two ways: the top sits so far below the arm it is meant to serve that every cup, book and lamp requires a lean and a reach downward, or the table wants floor the room cannot spare. Everything else — the marble, the blackened oak, the powder-coated aluminium — is decided after those two.

Which means the first move is not browsing but measuring. Put a tape on the arm of the chair or sofa the table will serve and write the number down. Then walk the gap where the table will stand and write that down too. The questions follow in the order the room asks them: height first, then floor, then what the table has to do besides hold a drink — and last, the point at which a side table stops being furniture and becomes the object the room is arranged around.

The arm decides the height

Tate End Table is the model to hold in mind. It is 24 inches high with a 23-inch round top: a white marble slab resting on a solid wood base finished in black, with the listing noting that the marble may vary. At that height the hand finds the top without looking down, which is the whole job. A round top carries a second advantage in a living room, because it has no corner waiting in the walkway and can sit at the end of a sofa without redrawing the route past it.

Saint Croix End Table takes the same idea in a denser material: 24 inches across, 26 inches high, and 94.5 pounds of marble, described by its maker as simple yet sculptural. Two inches above the Tate. That weight argues both ways. At 94.5 pounds, it calls for a considered position rather than casual moves around the room.

Wyatt End Table measures 28 inches across and 26 inches high in solid oak and oak veneer with a smoke finish — wider than either marble round above. Beside a deep sofa or an armchair with a broad stance it reads generous rather than large. Push it into the space between two chairs and it fills that space entirely, which is a different purchase from the one you thought you were making.

The lower half of the range solves another problem. Naples End Table stands 18.11 inches tall with a 20.87-inch top, a white powder-coated aluminium frame and a slatted top, described as part of the maker's Frost colour story and as coordinating with the Newport, Regatta and Carrara pieces. It is an outdoor side table, and that is the point: it is built to sit beside low outdoor seating. Carry its height to the chair you actually own and test it there, rather than assuming it will meet a sofa arm.

Stuart End Table sits at the same end of the scale: 22.75 inches wide and deep, 18 inches high, and offered two ways — solid mixed reclaimed wood in an aged Belgium bleach, or a solid White Calacatta marble top. Same low proportions, two very different rooms, and a reminder that a low table can be warm or cool without changing its height. Postcard End Table - Gold shows how far the label itself stretches: 30 inches square, 13 inches high and 99 pounds, in metal and stone with a Whisper of Gold finish. A top thirteen inches off the floor behaves nearer a plinth than a side table, and it wants very low seating or the middle of a conversation area rather than the end of a sofa.

Then walk the gap

Accolade Rectangular End Table - Carbon asks for a generous rectangle of floor: 27 inches wide, 25 inches deep and 25 inches high, 86 pounds, with a wire-brushed carbon finish and a glass top inset into the frame. In a large room that surface takes a lamp, a tray and a stack of magazines at once. In a small one, the same table quietly decides where the walkway goes.

Greta Rectangular End Table - Gray is nearly as wide at 26 inches but only 18 inches deep, at 25.25 inches high, with a marble top carried on an open base. That seven inches less depth against the Accolade is the whole argument for it: this is the table for the strip between a chair and a wall, where anything deeper would close the route behind it.

At the other extreme, Apothecary Tall End Table Red Travertine asks for an eight-inch square of floor at 23 inches high: 55 pounds of red travertine in a form that reads as a column more than a table. It gives a glass somewhere to land and nothing else, which is exactly the brief for a narrow slot between two chairs or a landing at the top of a stair. Its listing notes the occasional tables are reversible and pair in tall or low sizes, so confirm which version you are ordering before the floor decides for you.

What goes under the top

If the lamp is not the problem — if the problem is the remotes, the reading glasses and the post — then the useful question moves beneath the surface.

Couture End Table Petite - Beige is the most resolved storage answer in the group: 21 inches wide and deep, 22.25 inches high, with two drawers fronted in frosted bronze glass on soft-close undermount guides, an open centre for books and objects, a Koto wood top inset with smoked bronze glass, a plinth base and hidden casters so the whole piece can be pulled clear and pushed back. It is a table that tidies itself.

Vineyard Row Wine Barrel End Table - Light Wood closes its storage instead: 22 inches round and 25 inches high, a barrel form with two doors on soft-close hinges and magnetic catches, one adjustable wood shelf behind them, and a light Sonoma finish over pecky hickory veneers at 66 pounds. Closed storage keeps the top clear, which is usually what a table beside a chair needs most.

Melange Romano End Table leaves its shelves open: 22 inches wide, 24 inches high and 28 inches deep, a bowed front in oak solids and veneers over two fixed shelves, finished a rich golden brown, 60.64 pounds and listed as requiring no assembly. Those shelves are for what you want seen. The depth is the figure to take seriously, because 28 inches out from a wall is a real claim on a room with a walkway in it.

When the table has to move

The table beside a chair is not always the table you want there. When guests arrive, someone needs a second surface within reach, and the usual answer is to move the lamp aside. Nesting solves that without a second footprint standing in the room all week.

Dalston Nesting End Table - Raw Black puts a 15.75-inch square top at 21.25 inches and tucks a 12.5-inch companion underneath at 18.25 inches, both with squared aluminium tops in raw black and tapered legs on rounded feet, the pair weighing 29.63 pounds together. The room shows one table. The second one appears when it is wanted and goes back under when it is not — which is a different proposition from buying a pair and living with both.

Rook End Table Matte Black Aluminum makes weight the deciding factor rather than the spare surface. At 18 inches square and 20 inches high, formed from stainless steel and powder-coated matte black, it is listed at just over eight pounds, and its description says the tables work on their own or nested in a grouping. Eight pounds is a table you lift with one hand and carry to the sofa, and it is also the reason the floor underneath gets cleaned. Either way, the question is the same: how often does the second surface need to exist?

When the table is the colour in the room

At eighteen to twenty inches across, a saturated end table is not a supporting piece. It is the thing the eye lands on when it comes through the door, so the question is not which colour but how much of it the room can hold — and at what height it will be met.

Turin End Table is the smaller gesture: an 18-inch round top framed by a thick rim on an exaggerated bell-shaped base, in high-gloss navy lacquer over fibreglass. Everything about it is curved and closed, and the raised rim makes the top read as a tray — a surface that visibly holds a small stack of things rather than letting them disappear against a tabletop.

Zephyraby Large End Table - Green is the more architectural version of the same impulse. At 28 inches high, 24 by 20 inches and 52 pounds, its high-gloss lacquer carries the green up to 28 inches above the floor, so it belongs beside a high-armed chair, a bench or the end of a kitchen banquette, where a hand at rest finds it. Set it beside low seating and it stops being a side table and starts being a plinth.

Zephyraby Large End Table - Green

Bristol Fluted Marble End Table - Black Scalloped Marble goes the other way, darker rather than brighter. At 20 inches square and 20 inches high, 78.91 pounds of marble, its base is scalloped into vertical fluting under a polished black top. In a pale room it is the darkest thing at knee height and it earns the position. In a room already holding dark wood, a dark rug and a dark sofa, it will read as more of what is already there.

A short way to decide

Measure the arm first. If the number you write down is around 24 inches, Tate End Table will meet it, and Saint Croix End Table two inches higher will meet an arm that sits a little above that. If the arm is high, or the table is used standing, Zephyraby Large End Table - Green at 28 inches answers the same question from the other direction.

Then check the floor. If only 18 inches of depth can be spared, Greta Rectangular End Table - Gray fits where the deeper Accolade Rectangular End Table - Carbon would not, and where the gap is narrower still, Apothecary Tall End Table Red Travertine takes eight inches of it. If nothing needs to go under the top, the round and low pieces will do the work on their own. If things must disappear, Couture End Table Petite - Beige, Vineyard Row Wine Barrel End Table - Light Wood and Melange Romano End Table are three ways to hide them, and for a second cup, Dalston Nesting End Table - Raw Black and Rook End Table Matte Black Aluminum keep the extra surface out of the way until it is wanted.

The test is the same whichever you choose, and you can run it tonight: sit down, put your hand where the tabletop would be, and notice whether it lands without a reach. If it does, the finish is the easy part.
