Rattan Sofas: Which Materials Belong Indoors or Outside?
Late September is when a porch sofa has to justify itself: cushions that have spent half the year outside, a long seat that has been sat in with wet hair, an open weave you can see the wall through. Almost every woven sofa looks like that from across a room. The pale cushion, the curved arm, the repeating texture — those are the things the category shares, and they are also the least useful things to compare.
What separates these seven sofas is a line of type rather than a silhouette. The Rafael is specified in natural rattan; the Belle Vue and the Bryson in faux rattan; the Playa in resin wicker; the Porta in handwoven PE wicker detail over a hand-painted aluminum base. The Carlyle goes further, finishing its poles in the look of rattan over a powder-coated aluminum frame.
That line is not a technicality. It is usually the closest thing a listing offers to an answer about where the sofa can live: one piece is rated for indoor and outdoor use, several are listed as outdoor sofas, and another sits among sofas with a cover specified in Sunbrella acrylic over quick-dry foam and an aluminum base. Read the material first and the arm shape second, and the field stops looking like seven versions of one idea.
Natural rattan, faux rattan, resin wicker, painted aluminum
Natural rattan is the term most people use for all of this, and the rarer thing to actually specify. The Rafael names it outright: 94.49 inches wide, 43.31 deep, in natural rattan with sentier cream cushions. It is listed among sofas rather than outdoor sofas, which is the maker's way of putting it in a covered room or a sheltered porch. The Marvella arrives at a similar look through different language. Its images show a continuous honey-toned frame wrapped around ivory cushions, and the listing describes it as robust enough for outdoor use, with a Sunbrella acrylic cover, quick-dry foam and a dark brown powder-coated aluminum base.
The synthetic versions answer the placement question by changing the strand. Faux rattan and resin wicker are made to be left out. The Belle Vue is specified in grey faux rattan and listed for indoor and outdoor use; at 70.87 inches wide it is narrower than the 84-inch Marvella. The Bryson's faux woven rattan runs 100 inches across with viola sand cushions. The Playa's resin wicker, described in a Natural finish, covers an oversized deep-seat body with a track arm. The Porta publishes handwoven PE wicker detail on a brown hand-painted aluminum base and is listed as outdoor safe.
The Carlyle is the outlier, and it is worth understanding why. Its back and arms are cut into a fretwork lattice, styled in the spirit of eighteenth-century Chippendale originals as the listing puts it, with poles finished in the look of rattan over powder-coated aluminum and bindings at the joins. That construction lets the wall and the floor show through the frame in a way a solid upholstered back never will — a visual difference as much as a material one. At 64 inches wide, 30.5 deep and 37.5 high, it is the narrowest and tallest sofa here.
Width takes the wall. Depth takes the floor.
Widths in this group run from 64 inches for the Carlyle to 112.6 for the Playa, with the Rafael at 94.49, the Bryson at 100, the Marvella at 84 and the Belle Vue at 70.87; the Porta's two configurations sit at 69 and 80. But on a porch, or in the strip of floor between a sofa and a window, depth is what you brush past. The Belle Vue takes 41.73 inches from front to back — noticeably more floor than the 84-inch Marvella, which needs 33.
At one end of that range sit the Carlyle at 30.5 inches and the Marvella at 33; at the other, the Bryson at 35.83, the Playa at 37.01, the Belle Vue at 41.73 and the Rafael at 43.31. A sofa that reads smaller on the page can be the one that pinches the walkway, and a long sofa can be the easier neighbour if it stays shallow.
Seat depth, seat width and the height of the arms
Three of these publish the numbers that describe sitting rather than standing. The Belle Vue's seat is 23.62 inches deep and 62.99 wide, 14.96 inches off the floor, beneath arms at 20.87. The Bryson trades depth for length: a 20.47-inch seat, 90.94 inches of seat width and arms at 27.56, nearly seven inches higher than the Belle Vue's. The Rafael is the deepest of the three at 27.56, with a 67.72-inch seat width and arms at 23.62.
That is the real fork in this group. A shallow seat under a high arm reads as an upright bench you sit on and rise from; a deep seat behind a lower arm reads as something to spend an afternoon in. The Marvella at 30 inches tall and the Playa at 30.31 keep the sightline low, so whatever stands behind the sofa — a window, a hedge, a stretch of water — stays visible above it. The Carlyle's 37.5-inch back does the opposite and gives the seat a boundary, which is useful when the sofa stands out in the open rather than against a wall.
One long seat, or a corner you have to give up
A straight sofa arranges a room in a line; a chaise commits a corner. The Porta Sectional Arm Chaise is the piece here built for the second arrangement, and the listing separates its two configurations instead of treating them as one shape: the left arm chaise measures 69 inches wide and 39 deep, the right arm 80 inches wide and 36 deep, both 28 inches high. It is listed outdoor safe, with a Sunbrella acrylic cover over quick-dry foam, handwoven PE wicker detail and recycled material content.

That difference is worth checking before you order, because a left-arm and a right-arm chaise turn the seating in opposite directions — and the wider of the two is also the shallower. If the corner is the point, and there is a fire pit or a view or a low table the chaise should face, the Porta does something none of the straight sofas here can. If you need that floor to stay open, it is the wrong piece.
How to narrow it in two passes
First pass: where does the sofa live? If it stays outside and gets rained on, start with the pieces the maker calls outdoor — the Belle Vue, the Bryson, the Playa, the Carlyle and the Porta — and add the Marvella, which the listing describes as robust enough for outdoor use. If it lives in a living room or under a roof, the Rafael's natural rattan and sentier cream cushions are the most interior-minded of the group.
Second pass: how do you want to sit, and what do you need to walk past? A narrow walkway points to the Carlyle's 30.5 inches of depth or the Marvella's 33. Two people who intend to sprawl want the Rafael's 27.56-inch seat. Two people who want elbow room and an upright perch want the Bryson's 90.94 inches of seat width, or the Playa's oversized body. Then decide whether you are arranging a line or closing a corner, and whether the back of the sofa should disappear below a window or stand up as a division.
Across a room, all seven of these read as the same generous idea. The material line is what tells them apart — and once you have read it, the shape is the easy part.
