Round Mirrors Above Dressers: Size the Reflection Right

The mirror above a dresser is the only mirror in a house that has to work. You stand in front of it at a foot and a half with both hands full, and it has to give back a collar, a jawline, an earring, the back of your head. Every other mirror in the room can be chosen for how it looks from across the hall. This one is asked to be accurate.

Which is why the number printed largest on a round mirror's page, its diameter, is not the number that decides whether it works. That measurement belongs to the outer frame. The Twig Round Mirror is 44 inches across and states a reflective area of 21 inches. The Bamboo Round Mirror is nine inches smaller overall, at 35 inches, and states 29.75 inches of reflective area. The smaller mirror shows more of you.

The distance between those two figures is the argument of this guide. A round mirror is usually bought for its shape, but shape is only the first of three decisions: how much glass the frame leaves you, how far the frame projects off the wall, and what the frame is made of. Taken out of order, a mirror chosen for its outline can end up above a dresser you have to lean around.

Everything here assumes one place: the strip of wall above a dresser, a chest or a console, where the mirror is read at close range and where the objects standing on the surface below it compete for the same few inches of depth.

The frame eats the glass

A frame can take a third of a mirror, or almost none of it. Depth is the number you feel at seven in the morning

It is 42 inches across, 1.25 inches deep and 45 pounds, a wide circle that stays close to the wall, so the plane of the glass rather than the relief of the frame is what the room registers.

Two ways to put black on a wall

Black above a dresser is usually less a color decision than a weight decision, and two mirrors make the point by pulling in opposite directions.

Side by side, the two black mirrors pose the question you are really answering: do you want the mirror to be an object the wall is arranged around, or a large quiet surface the room simply reflects in?

When the frame is a material, not a finish

Some frames are not finished so much as they are made of something. When nothing goes on the wall at all

Not every dresser wall can take a mirror. A table mirror is a different tool. Start with reflection, then relief, then material. If you need to see yourself properly above a dresser, 29.75 inches of glass in a 35-inch bamboo frame will do more than 21 inches in a 44-inch twig one, and the vine you give up was never doing the work.
