Outdoor Teak Dining Tables: Check the Base and Shade First
Set a chair at the end of an outdoor dining table and the table tells you what it is. If the base clears the floor there, the chair slides in and the table reads as generous. If four legs stand at the corners, the end seat has to negotiate with a post, and the place setting you planned on paper becomes a small daily compromise you will notice every evening you eat outside.
That is the first thing a teak top conceals. Every table gathered here is teak, and all of them stand between 29 and 30 inches high, so the working height of the table settles itself before you compare anything else. Length, width and tone are visible from across the terrace. What is not visible from that distance is how the base meets the floor, whether the top carries a hole for an umbrella, how much the piece weighs, and what color the wood will be when it is delivered.
Those four questions sort a field of nearly identical honey-toned tables remarkably fast.
Watch where the legs land
A corner-leg table is a formal thing. The Coastal Teak 72" Dining Table puts a 71-inch top in 100 percent solid teak on a frame whose legs sit at the four corners, and the Vistamar Aged Teak does the same with bold squared legs under a geometric slatted top. Both leave the ends of the table to guests who will sit slightly inside the edge rather than square to it. That is fine with a bench along one side; it is less so if you plan to seat someone at the head of the table every night.
Bases that clear the ends buy ease. The Coastal Teak 56" Round Dining Table sets its round teak top on an X-shaped base, so chairs can be drawn up at any point on the circle. The Round Dining Table - Taupe takes the same freedom to 60 inches and rests the top on a curved pedestal, with 181 pounds holding it in place. The Bell Rive goes a third way: a long 94.49-inch top over a trestle base with a low rail between the feet, which keeps both ends open for chairs and gives the middle of the table something to look at underneath.
Depth then decides whether any of it has room. At 71 by 34 inches, the Bellevue Outdoor Dining Table is the narrowest here, a slatted teak top on a rectangular metal frame and the one to consider when the table shares its floor with a doorway. The Glover runs 96.46 inches long, 43.31 inches deep and weighs 178.57 pounds in natural teak. Nothing about that table is temporary. If the terrace doubles as a play space, or if you like to shift furniture with the seasons, weight belongs in the decision alongside width.
Plan the shade before choosing the top
Confirm the exact table’s umbrella provision before ordering. The Coastal Teak 72-inch Dining Table is listed with an umbrella hole and a cap included. The Coastal Teak 56-inch Round Dining Table, offered in the same finish by the same maker, is listed with no umbrella hole. A shared finish does not mean the tops offer the same arrangement for shade.
Decide where the shade will come from before settling on a shape. With a cantilever umbrella or a fixed roof, the Coastal Teak 56-inch round can keep the tabletop uninterrupted. If your plan requires a pole through the middle, confirm the opening and pole compatibility for the model you choose. The Round Dining Table - Taupe shows a center opening above its pedestal base; check its dimensions against your umbrella before ordering.
Natural teak, or teak that has already arrived
Some of these tables let the wood keep its own tone. The Osario is natural teak with sand-finished legs; the Bell Rive and the Glover stay natural across the whole surface. All three are specified in natural teak, so the honey-brown tone is the tone you plan the terrace around. Sunset West is the maker here who writes about change: its Coastal Teak listing says the solid teak develops a lovely patina over time, and those tables arrive finished in a hand-applied warm grey rather than raw honey.
Other finishes offer a different starting palette. The Vistamar Aged Teak reads pale and weathered over a top listed at 2.95 inches thick. The Hale Outdoor Dining Table - Washed Brown-FSC lays washed brown teak planks over an angular base, with a note to cover or store it indoors when it is not in use. And the Round Dining Table - Taupe goes furthest in this direction, wire-brushing the teak and finishing it in a light taupe with ivory cerusing so the grain stays legible as a drawing rather than a color.
Which is better depends on the room the table joins. A terrace of grey paving, silvered timber or pale stone tends to look settled the day a grey, taupe or washed table lands on it, and the match is one less thing to wait for. In a warmer setting of brick, honey-toned stone or terracotta, consider the natural-teak color instead. Compare the delivered finish with the surfaces already on your terrace; do not assume that every natural-teak model will weather in the same way.
When the metal draws the line
Teak is not always the loudest material in the arrangement. In several of these tables a metal frame holds the wood, and the frame's color becomes the strongest line in the room. The SoHo Rectangle Dining Table pairs teak slats with a powder-coated aluminum frame offered in black, silver or white, which makes one table into three different outlines. Black draws the table's shape against pale paving, white lets the teak appear to float, and silver sits between the two and picks up whatever the light is doing.
The Rectangular Dining Table - Obsidian uses the same idea at full volume. An 88-by-44-inch top in plantation-grown teak sits over a base of dark graphite aluminum whose surface carries a light texture, so the metal reads first and the wood supplies the warmth. The Avanti Square Dining Table 40" goes the other way, joining teak slats to marine-grade stainless steel. At 40 by 40 inches it is the smallest footprint here, which matters more than any finish when the terrace is short on width.
The table that is two lengths
An outdoor table that extends spends most of its life at its shortest. The Chelsea Oval Extension Dining Table 74" - 98" is 74 inches closed and 98 open, 45 inches across either way, with self-storing leaves that the maker says add two extra place settings. The SoHo Extension Dining Table works the same way in teak on painted aluminum, running from 80 to 115 inches and offered in black, silver or white.
Measure the closed length against the terrace first, because that is the table you will walk around for most of the year. The open length is the version you need twice a season, and it does not have to leave room for circulation behind the chairs. Leaves that store inside the table, as the Chelsea's are described, also spare you from finding a cupboard for two panels the rest of the year.
Choosing by the terrace you have
If the walkway has to stay open, start with the 34-inch Bellevue. If chairs should be able to sit anywhere around the table, look for an X base like the 56-inch Coastal Teak round or the pedestal under the Round Dining Table - Taupe. If shade means a pole through the top, confirm the hole before you commit to a shape: the Coastal Teak 72" carries one, the 56-inch round does not. If you need two more seats twice a year, pay for the extension and plan around the shorter length. If the table will never move, the Glover's 178.57 pounds is not a problem but a fact about how permanent the arrangement is. And if you want the tone settled on delivery day, buy the finish that has already been applied.
Then return to the photograph and picture a chair at the end of the table. Where the base leaves room, the table will feel larger than its measurements; where it does not, you will feel the leg every evening. The top is the part you photograph. The base is the part you use.
