Sectional Sofa Layouts: Compare Depth & Orientation

Oct 5, 2026

Most people measure a sectional against a wall. It is the easiest measurement in the room to take and the least useful one. A sectional is not a width; it is a shape drawn on the floor, and the part of it that decides the room is the return — the section that comes forward at a right angle to the back.

Try it on a fourteen-foot terrace. The Fossil Outdoor 5 Piece Sectional runs 154 inches along its back, and its 114-inch overall depth is the return: the seating comes forward at both ends and closes around a table, leaving one long side for the way in and out. The Eamon Outdoor 2-Piece Sectional - Right Chaise makes that move only once. It is 133.5 inches wide and 73.5 inches deep overall, and only one end turns forward. Both are sold as sectionals. They will not build the same space, and only one of them suits the terrace you have.

So before comparing fabrics, sketch three lines: the run along the wall, the depth of one seat, and the length of the return. Everything else — orientation, curve, whether a corner exists at all — is a variation on those three.

The word sectional does not promise a corner

Fairbanks Outdoor 3-Piece Sectional - Alessi Fawn - Sofa is a sectional in delivery only. Three pieces arrive; the shape they make is 109.5 inches wide and 36.5 inches deep, over a plinth-style teak base, with dramatic tufting across the back and no turn anywhere. You get the straight run of a sofa plus the ability to move it in parts, and you give up the corner entirely — which is exactly right when the wall you are dressing ends in a doorway, a step down, or the only route to the grill.

The Outdoor Sofa Nomade Natural Teak Lucio Sand makes the opposite trade. It is 79.53 inches wide and 44.09 inches deep, with a 26.77-inch seat depth and cushions in a solution-dyed acrylic, and it is listed for indoor and outdoor use. That 26.77-inch seat depth is the whole point: this is a sofa to sink into rather than one to wrap around. If your long wall already has enough going on, the straight sofa is the underrated answer.

One return, or two

A single return is the forgiving shape. It lines a wall, faces the view and leaves the long side open for traffic. Eamon keeps its chaise on the right, with a woven frame, a knife-edge back and box seat cushions, offered in Casa Cream, Dove Taupe and Faux Hyacinth — a quiet outline holding one clear corner.

Two returns buy enclosure. The Fossil U seats a crowd and gives a coffee table a protected middle, and its knife-edge slipcovers in 100% olefin are described as UV-resistant, water-repellent and quick-drying, which is sensible for a piece that will hold the centre of a terrace. What the enclosure costs you is an open side. On a wide terrace that is a pleasure; on a narrow one it is a wall you have built in the middle of the only path.

Which side the return lands on

Left and right are conventions, and the convention matters more than it should. One published guide to sectional orientation defines facing by standing in front of the piece and looking at it: if the longer section extends to the left, the piece is left-facing. The same guide makes the practical case for caring — the extended portion should keep walkways, doorways and sightlines open rather than close them off.

That makes orientation a purchase decision rather than a footnote. The Nuage Sofa sells it as one: the same 96-inch-wide indoor sofa, 46 inches deep overall with an 18-inch seat height and a seat depth between 24 and 28 inches, is listed in left and right configurations across a long run of colourways. If the door is on the left, the return should land on the right, and that is worth checking against your own drawing of the room before the order goes in.

Height changes the plan as much as orientation does. The Outdoor Sofa Björn L mauritius light grey spans 118.11 inches wide and 101.18 inches deep but stands only 27.56 inches high, a little over ten inches above its 16.93-inch seat, and lower than the 34.5-inch Eamon and the 31.5-inch Fossil. A back that stops near hip height keeps a garden or a skyline visible over the cushions; a taller back does the opposite, which may be exactly what you want when the view behind the sofa is a fence.

When the corner is the problem

A right angle is not the only way to make a place to sit. The Redondo Curved Sofa in Cast Silver, No Welt is 69.33 inches wide, 37.32 inches deep and 28.15 inches high, a low back on a powder-coated aluminum frame in a brushed slate finish. What that produces is a bow instead of a corner: seating that curves around a view, a bay, or the end of a narrow terrace where a perpendicular return would point straight at the door.

It is a smaller piece with a smaller job. A curve seats fewer people and does not enclose a table the way a U does, but it also does not demand the one wide opening a U demands. Where the floor is tight or the shape of the room is already complicated, the curve can be the more generous answer.

The footprint you also have to cover

Outdoor seating carries a second footprint: the one you cover at night and before weather. Fossil, Fairbanks and Eamon all ask to be covered or stored indoors during inclement weather and when not in use. Following that is simple with the 36.5-inch-deep Fairbanks and a genuine job with a U that measures 114 inches front to back. The Outdoor Sofa Björn L mauritius light grey notes outdoor covers included, which removes the question entirely — and if covers are not included with the piece you choose, decide where they will live before the sectional arrives rather than after.

Begin with the walkway, not the wall

If the path through the room runs along the seating, take one return or none: Eamon with its single right chaise, the Fairbanks run of three pieces, or the deep, straight Nomade. If the seating is the destination — a wall, a table in the middle and nowhere anyone needs to walk through — a U like the Fossil earns the floor it takes, provided one side stays open. If the plan is awkward or the terrace narrow, a curve such as Redondo can help you fit the seating to the available floor rather than adding a perpendicular return.

And indoors, the same three lines apply: measure the run, measure the seat depth, then decide which side the return should land on and check it against the drawing. Nuage sells that decision as a left or a right. The wall will accept almost anything. It is the walkway that says no.
