Outdoor Lounge Chairs: Match Seat Height and Depth to Your Terrace
It happens about twenty minutes into a warm evening. You sit down, the cushion gives more than the photograph suggested, and you finish the conversation leaning forward with a drink held level over your knees. Nothing is broken. The chair was built for a different hour than the one you are having.
Outdoor lounge chairs are almost always sold on silhouette — wide arms, thick cushions, a handsome weave photographed against white. The two numbers that decide whether you keep using the chair sit further down the page: seat height and seat depth. Among the upright lounge chairs gathered here — the two full-length chaises are a separate case, measured further down — published seat heights run from 14.76 inches to 18.5 inches, and published seat depths from 20.75 inches to 29.53 inches. Roughly three and a half inches of height and nearly nine inches of depth is the distance between a chair you eat lunch in and a chair you disappear into. Finish, weave and frame material are decisions about how the chair looks while you are sitting in it; these two numbers decide whether you sit there at all.
Seat height decides who is still comfortable after dinner
The Hilda Outdoor Chair holds the second-highest published seat height in this selection. Its seat height is 18.31 inches and its seat back measures 13.19 inches, so you sit up in it rather than sink; the sling-style back and splayed, tapered legs bring the whole chair in at 22.49 pounds, which matters if it gets dragged into shade at four and back out at seven. At 28.75 inches wide and 29.50 inches deep, it is also one of the few here that will fit a narrow balcony where a deeper chair would crowd the door.
The Branford Outdoor Chair is the opposite proposition. Its seat height is 14.76 inches — about three and a half inches lower — and it spreads across 49.50 inches of width, with a 35.43-inch seat width and 25.12 inches of seat depth. Two of them side by side take more than eight feet of wall. It also asks a real question before you choose a finish, because the frame comes two ways: aluminum with acrylic upholstery at 78.04 pounds, or solid FSC-certified teak with olefin upholstery at 98.15 pounds. Twenty pounds is not a styling note. It is the difference between one person repositioning a chair and two.
The Outdoor Chair Relax Florent Beige shows how quickly those numbers separate from the category label. Its 18.5-inch seat height is the highest published seat height in this selection, and its seat depth is 29.53 inches inside a chair 41.34 inches front to back. That pairing reads strangely on paper and sensibly in person: you sit down at a normal height and still have enough cushion ahead of you to pull a leg up sideways. It wears a 100% solution-dyed acrylic in Florent beige over a black base, and an outdoor cover is included — a small line item that matters more than the finish once October arrives.
Depth and width: how much terrace the chair really takes
Depth is where outdoor seating plans go wrong, because a chair's depth is not just upholstery — it is floor you give up in front of it. The Marseille Outdoor Chair is 38 inches deep and 29.25 inches high, with brown-finished teak framing deep, low seating in a neutral beige. The reward is a reclined angle; the cost is that the chair wants open floor ahead of it rather than a wall directly opposite.
The Warner Outdoor Chair keeps a similar footprint — 30.25 inches wide, 32 inches deep — but stands at 34.25 inches high on sculpted, gently sanded turned legs in weathered grey FSC-certified teak, with an olefin cushion. Where Marseille asks you to lean back, Warner lets you step out of the chair without pushing off the arms. If this is where shoes go on before the garden, that difference settles it.
Width is a separate budget. The Odette Outdoor Chair is 45.25 inches wide and 27.5 inches high — low enough to sit under a windowsill — with loose bolsters cradling a fixed seat and deep brown upholstery over stained saddle-brown FSC-certified teak. Wide, low chairs like this read generous alone and crowded in pairs, so mark the footprint on the terrace before deciding how many you want.
Does the chair need to turn, rock, or hang?
A lounge chair does not have to face one direction forever, and this is where a terrace gains the most from a single purchase. The Zurich Outdoor Swivel Chair is the smaller of the two turning chairs here, 28.5 inches wide and 33.5 inches deep, in aluminum with acrylic and polyethylene over a vintage white finish. In a corner too tight to angle a fixed chair, a swivel does the work of two seating positions without taking more floor.
The Maven Outdoor Swivel Chair is the same idea with more chair around it: 31.25 inches wide, a 360-degree swivel, and a shell in faux hyacinth over an aluminum frame, offered in Alessi Slate or Alessi Buff. Its published seat height is 17.52 inches and its seat depth is 20.87 inches — numbers that describe sitting up rather than sinking low, which suits the person who intends to keep talking rather than settle in.
The Portia Outdoor Rocking Chair moves instead of turning — 28 inches wide and 37 inches deep, steel with all-weather polyethylene wicker at 60.19 pounds, on a shape based on a vintage rocker. Its 20.75-inch seat depth is the shallowest among the chairs here with a published figure, so it holds you upright while the chair does the moving. Leave clearance in front of and behind the runners; a rocker's published depth is where it rests, not where it travels.
The Milano Hanging Chair in Echo Ash w/ Self Welt is the one that changes the room rather than the seat. At 44.75 inches wide and 82 inches high, it is a cocoon frame wrapped in all-weather olefin rope, cushioned in Sunbrella Echo Ash with three back pillows and one seat cushion. The powder-coated steel hanging base and chain come with it, so the whole arrangement stands on the terrace floor — which means it can claim a corner no conventional chair can use, and that the corner needs height above it.
When the chair is closer to a bed — and when the terrace is small
The two chaises are a different kind of seat, and the reason the measuring frame above was scoped to upright chairs: their seat depth runs far beyond anything a lounge chair publishes. The Royce Outdoor Chaise - Washed Brown - Venao Grey is 78.75 inches long and 14.25 inches high, built on solid FSC-certified teak with a UV-resistant, water-repellent Sunproof fabric, and a matching outdoor cover is referenced. Nearly six and a half feet of length is an entire small terrace given to one seat.
The Chaise Longue Bella Vista is shorter and much narrower: 61.81 inches long, 26.97 inches wide, with a 51.18-inch seat depth, a 17.32-inch seat height and the outdoor cushion set included in black or white. The narrow width is the useful part — this is the shape that fits a side yard or the strip beside a wall where a full chaise would not.
At the other end of the scale is the Radcliffe Outdoor Lounge Chair - Vintage Natural, 20.5 inches wide and 27 inches deep, in a neutral tan all-weather wicker that curves into an S. It is the chair for the corner of a balcony, the sliver beside a door, or the spot where nothing with wide arms will fit, and the maker offers it for indoor use as well as outdoor.
Frame, weather, and where the chair goes in the off-season
Most of the chairs here carry the same instruction at the bottom of the page: cover or store indoors during inclement weather and when not in use. That is not a footnote — it is a place in the house, planned in advance. Branford, Warner, Marseille, Odette, Hilda, Maven, Portia, Radcliffe and Royce all say some version of it, and the chair that is hardest to move is also the heaviest. If there is no garage, basement or covered corner waiting for a 98-pound teak chair, that shapes the choice more than cushion color does.
The exceptions are worth knowing. The Drone Armchair by Skyline is positioned by its maker for year-round outdoor use, with a powder-coated aluminum frame, a high-density polyethylene weave, Sunbrella fabric over a foam core and a venting mesh intended to reduce drying time. It is 42 inches wide, 40 inches long and 45 inches high at 33 pounds — and the armchair and the back cushion and pillow are listed as separate variants, so it is worth confirming which one is in the cart.
The Redondo Club Chair in Cast Silver, No Welt takes a different route: a low back and linear frame at 27.36 inches high, powder-coated aluminum in a hand-brushed Slate finish, Sunbrella cushions and adjustable non-marring feet. It belongs to a Slate color story that also includes the Milano hanging chair, which is useful if the two are going to stand within sight of each other.
Choose the evening, then the chair
Sort the decision by what happens on the terrace, not by what the chair looks like empty. If plates and glasses are involved, start with seat height: Hilda at 18.31 inches, Maven at 17.52, Portia at 17.50, Bella Vista at 17.32. If the chair is where you read until the light goes, chase depth instead — Relax at 29.53 inches, Branford at 25.12 — then make sure the floor in front of it stays clear.
If the seating has to serve a group that keeps shifting, buy movement before you buy another chair: Zurich or Maven swivels, Portia rocks, Milano hangs. If the plan includes lying down, measure the long side first — Royce at 78.75 inches, Bella Vista at 61.81. And if the whole terrace is one corner, the Radcliffe at 20.5 inches wide will do more for the space than a fourth full-size chair.
The last check is the one the photograph never answers. Where does the chair go in November, and who is carrying it? Choose the frame you can move and the weather story you can live with, and the chair you buy in September will still be the one you sit in next June.
